Adding an Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, or Live.com account

Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, and Live.com addresses are all personal Microsoft accounts, and Mailspring connects to them the same way it connects to Office 365 / Microsoft 365.

  1. In Mailspring, go to Preferences > Accounts and click +.
  2. Choose Outlook.com / Hotmail from the list of providers. (The Office 365 option works too — both sign in with Microsoft.)
  3. Your browser opens to Microsoft's sign-in page. Sign in with your Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, or Live.com address, complete any two-factor prompts, and allow Mailspring to access your mail.
  4. Return to Mailspring — your account is added and starts syncing.

Because Mailspring signs in with Microsoft's OAuth flow, you don't need to enter your password in Mailspring or create an app password, even if two-factor authentication is enabled.

If Microsoft reports an authentication error after you sign in, IMAP or SMTP access may be disabled on your account. See Connecting to Microsoft Office 365 and Outlook.com for how to enable it.
